History

The Establishment and Foundation

The Libyan University, formerly known as the first Libyan university, was founded in Benghazi on Thursday, December 15, 1955, following the promulgation of the law shortly after Libya’s independence.


The university’s development progressed through the following milestones:

– Sunday, January 22, 1956, the university was officially opened.
– Monday, January 23, 1956, Academic instruction officially commenced.

 

The university initially began with the Faculty of Arts and Education, enrolling 31 students. Teaching was delivered by six academic staff members, supported by nine administrative employees.


1957 The Faculty of Commerce and Economics was established.
1962 The Faculty of Law was established

October 6, 1968 The foundation stone of the university campus was laid.
1970 The faculty of Medicine was established.
1970 The Department of Arabic Language and Islamic Studies was established, headquartered in Al-Bayda.
August 1973 The university was renamed to University of Benghazi.

1973 The Faculty of Engineering was established.
1974 The faculties of Dentistry and Science were established.

1974 The university relocated from its original site in Benghazi to its current campus in Qaryounis.
1975 The Faculty of Agriculture was established.
1976 The university’s name was changed fromUniversity of Benghazi to University of Qaryounis.

September 1984 All medical faculties were joined under a single institution named “Arab Medical University.”
1989 The faculty of Pharmacy was established.
1994 The faculty of Public Health was established.

1999 The medical faculties were re-integrated into the University of Qaryounis.
2004 The Faculty of Education was established.
2006 The Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology was established.

2007 The medical faculties were again separated under the name “Arab Medical University.”

2007 The faculty of Nursing was established.
February 17, 2011  The university’s name reverted to The University of Benghazi, and the medical faculties were reintegrated.
2011 The Department of Media and Communication Studies was established.
2015 The faculty of Biomedical and Technical Sciences was established.

2019 The faculties of Physical Education and Modern Languages were established.
