Dr Mahmoud Al-Werfalli Publishes International Research in PLOS ONE (Q1)
In a notable scientific achievement reflecting the growing Libyan and Arab research presence on the international stage, Dr Mahmoud Mohammed Al-Werfalli, a faculty member at the Faculty of Medicine, Benghazi University, contributed to the publication of a peer-reviewed research paper in PLOS ONE , a Q1-ranked journal indexed in Scopus, on 27 March 2026.
The study, titled “Outcomes of hyperglycaemia in pregnancy in Africa: Systematic review and meta-analysis”, is considered an advanced piece of research employing a systematic review and meta-analysis methodology. It analysed data from 30 scientific studies, covering approximately 9,742 cases across several African countries, with the aim of assessing the impact of hyperglycemia during pregnancy on maternal and neonatal health.
The significance of this study lies in several key areas, most notably addressing a clear knowledge gap within the African context by providing comprehensive data on associated health complications.
The findings also support the development of health policies, highlighting the importance of enhancing early screening programmes and maternal healthcare, particularly given the condition’s association with higher rates of caesarean delivery and preterm birth.
The study further indicates variations in outcomes across different countries, underscoring the need for more high-quality research. It also sheds light on the long-term impact of the condition, as women affected by gestational diabetes face an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life. It is worth noting that Dr Mahmoud Al-Werfalli, who is also a researcher at the University of Cape Town, contributed to this work through data analysis and the evaluation of study quality, further highlighting the active role of Libyan academic professionals in advancing international scientific research and addressing global health issues.
