In Cooperation with the University of Benghazi, A delegation from Ulster University in Ireland Begins the Second Season of the Ancient Ports of Cyrenaica Project

The University of Benghazi, headed by Professor Eiz Eldeen Aldressi, received an academic delegation from Ireland’s University of Ulster, marking the launch of the second season of the “Ancient Ports of Cyrenaica” project.

The project is being implemented in partnership between the University of Benghazi, the Libyan Antiquities Authority at the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, and the University of Ulster in Ireland.

Fieldwork is scheduled to begin tomorrow in the city of Tocra and will continue until next Friday, before the team moves to the Al-Haniya area for two weeks to conduct field studies and research at the Al-Aqla archaeological site.

The project falls under a joint scientific and research cooperation agreement between the two universities, known as the “Mariya Project”. It aims to carry out specialised scientific studies and research on the impact of climate change on coastal and archaeological sites, while developing appropriate scientific mechanisms to preserve archaeological heritage and protect it from various environmental risks.

The project also seeks to advance joint scientific output through the publication of research findings in classified international scientific journals. It will also include field and academic training programmes for students of the Department of Archaeology at the University of Benghazi, contributing to the development of their research and professional skills and providing them with practical experience in archaeology and cultural heritage management.

This international cooperation reflects the University of Benghazi’s commitment to expanding its scientific partnerships with leading global academic institutions, supporting research in fields related to the protection of cultural heritage, and advancing the sustainable development of Libya’s archaeological sites.
