University of Benghazi: An Active Partner in the ARMONIA Project to Modernise Higher Education in Libya under Erasmus+
As part of its efforts to develop higher education and expand international academic partnerships, the University of Benghazi continues its active participation in the ARMONIA Project for the Modernisation of Higher Education in Libya, funded under the Erasmus+ Programme. The project brings together Libyan higher education institutions, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and several European partners.
The project aims to support reform and modernisation within Libyan higher education institutions by aligning the national education system with the principles and practices of the European Bologna Process. This includes improving educational quality, promoting academic recognition, updating academic programmes, and advancing the internationalisation of higher education institutions.
ARMONIA also focuses on reviewing teaching and learning environments in Libyan universities and developing modern policies and strategies based on learning outcomes, quality assurance, internationalisation, and the social dimension of higher education. It also supports universities in applying relevant European tools and practices.
The project seeks to create a collaborative environment bringing together Libyan universities, government bodies, and international partners. This allows for the exchange of expertise and best practices, the joint identification of priorities and strategic actions, and support for the development of Libya’s national regulatory framework for higher education.
The University of Benghazi participates in a broad partnership that includes several Libyan and European universities and institutions, among them the Mediterranean Universities Union (UNIMED), Istanbul Aydın University, Sapienza University of Rome, and the University of Pavia, alongside the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and several Libyan universities.
Since the project began, its activities have included a series of meetings, study visits, training programmes, and workshops. These began with an online introductory meeting, followed by the project launch meeting in Rome, Italy, as well as field visits, specialised sessions, staff training weeks, and professional development programmes in quality assurance, internationalisation, academic mobility, programme design, and teaching methods.
Through its participation in the ARMONIA Project, the University of Benghazi confirms its commitment to keeping pace with developments in higher education and benefiting from international experience and expertise. This contributes to improving its academic outcomes, expanding its presence in regional and international university cooperation, and supporting the development of a more flexible and effective higher education system in Libya that can respond to international standards and practices.
